Am I really ADHD? Am I really a coach? Am I a good mom? Am I really [fill-in-the-blank]??!! The internal conversations flow through my head like popcorn popping.
The reality is, I am all those things, just not 100% of the time and never perfectly, for that matter. During those less than 100% moments, self-doubt and feeling like I'm an impostor take over. That leads to disconnecting from my purpose, the passion that I feel when I am 100% in my element.
What is it about those less than optimal times in our lives that make us doubt? Believing that if I do not FEEL IT, I am NOT IT? Impostor Syndrome or Perfectionism could be to blame.
“Perfectionists are often driven by the fear of disappointing themselves or others,” said clinical psychologist and author Sharon Saline, Psy.D. in a recent ADDitude webinar on perfectionism. “They are all-or-nothing thinkers; if it’s not completely right, then it must be a failure.”
Yet, somehow knowing I tend to be a perfectionist in my work escapes me when I am in the thick of self-loathing. I am working through this actively. Releasing the should-be's and trading them for good-enoughs is what I strive for! One. Day. At. A. Time.
If you also struggle with perfectionism, take a look at this article that I'm using to break the cycle, "7 Ways I Combat Impostor Syndrome and Perfectionism."
